How to make Whole Grain Self Rising Flour, transitioning to 100% whole grain baking.

Our family has been on a journey to eat more whole grains. And while this has not come about overnight, I am proud to say we are almost 100% whole grain at this time. Save the hot dog buns my husband like to keep around for his hot dogs and football Sundays! 

I did not start out with blazing guns during this transition, because I know from previous times, that a slower change is a stronger and more sustaining change. 

When I first made self-rising flour I used only 25% whole grains. And as each batch was used in recipes, and I needed to re-stock my pantry, I would increase the whole grains by one cup and decrease the all-purpose flour to accommodate this change over to whole grain baking. 

If you want to make self-rising flour for your pantry, you will find a few recipes in my files calling for self-rising flour and believe me, when I come across another good recipe using this time saver pantry ingredient, I will be happy to share it right here. 

How to make Homemade Whole Grain Self Rising Flour, for you homemade pantry.

8 c whole wheat flour - we prefer pastry grind for all baking
4 T baking powder
2 t salt

Combine all ingredients, using a whisk. Continue to whisk together until all ingredients are completely mixed. Store in a covered container, in a cool dry place.

Your self-rising flour will keep fresh for the same length of time you normally keep whole wheat flour. Because there is no fat or other ingredients to go stale this is very convenient to have on hand.
