Today I have a great kitchen hack for you. It all started with a broken stove. The oven actually, but since we removed it from the wall to unplug the power, then remove the element, it has stayed in that position awaiting the arrival of the element. Which was promised in 3 to 5 business days.

My dear husband requested that due to the exposed wires, we make do with other appliances for cooking in the meanwhile. This was not a burdensome request as we are well stocked with slow cookers, griddles, a small convection countertop oven, and microwave. Actually, it became a challenge to see how we could continue cooking in the same manner and style without a stove and standard oven.

There are some kitchen basics that needed to be made, as our storage jars are empty. One being granola. I did not relish the idea of the small countertop oven, not much granola was going to fit on that tiny baking tray. And I could see where spending all day making granola in that little guy, would not be my idea of a good time.

Honestly, I could have waited to make granola, it is only 3 to 5 business days, after all. But then while visiting Weekend Cooking, there is was, plain as daylight. Information and directions for making granola in your slow cooker. 

So the challenge was on!


Below you will find directions to take your favorite granola recipe and adapt it to the slow cooker. If you are searching for a granola recipe to enjoy, a few of those have been offered as well. I made our favorite Coconut Granola with Almonds recipe, to test the direction for you, and this process is a winner!

Kitchen Hack, Slow Cooker Granola

1 slow cooker
your favorite granola recipe
oil or cooking/baking spray

Combine all granola ingredients into a very large bowl, mixing well.

Coat the inside of the slow cooker with oil or baking spray. Add the granola mixture.

Cover with the lid, however, leave one edge open by propping it to the side of the crock. This is important you must allow the moisture to escape.

Cook on high, stirring every 30 minutes until the granola has taken on a golden color and smells cooked, approximately 2 - 21/2 hours.

Trust me, it smells wonderful when done, you will know you have reached the end!

Transfer the granola back to the large bowl or a flat pan for cooling, again this is important, you want the remaining moisture to evaporate.

When completely cool, you may add dried fruit if desired and package up for storage.

  3. I'm back to making my homemade toasted muesli today as I type, for the first time since summer started (it's simply too hot to have the oven on for 2 hrs so I make do with store bought muesli until the cool weather arrives). But now that I know I can also cook it in my slow cooker!!!!!!
    Bravo!!
    I love to add spices to mine - cardamon, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, ground clove and I load it up with mixed nuts during the last half hour or so of baking time.

    you're right the smell that wafts around the house is divine :-)

Green beans are in our freezer for use this winter. Having grown in our garden this summer. I have never been a big fan of green beans, until growing our own. There is something satisfying about cooking what you grow. There is a lot we have learned about growing what you will cook.....


We were successful with green beans last year and again this year. However, we did not grow the same beans this year. This year we grew tri-colored beans. They are beautiful as well as tasty. You will see that once cooked, magically the beans are all the same color.

When I eat Tex-Mex, I enjoy a spicy, vinegary condiment on my food. And when we have fish for dinner, I want something with a bit of a bite to it, to add some excitement. Fish can be a bit tame on that dinner plate. You could also tuck a spoonful of this crispy, spicy, sweet and puckery delight in a sandwich or anywhere else a spicy flavor is desired!

For this recipe we used carrots stored in our root cellar from last fall, I think we can call the root cellar project a success!

2 bunches of radishes
