If you are looking for a new breakfast recipe that is a step-up from the usual bowl of oatmeal, Morning Oats with Maple Blueberry Compote and Toasted Hemp Hearts is for you!

Oatmeal is one of those foods that is often scorned as boring, yet incredibly healthy and good for us! Full of soluble fiber which is just as important for all of the little loves in your life as it is for you...and if you look close, there are thousands of suggested ways to prepare, eat, and enjoy this grain. There are even a few recipes right here, in the archives. 

Our morning oats have been kicked up a notch with this combo, and I couldn't wait to share the recipe with you! The taste is fresh and flavorful, without being too sweet. This breakfast offering also is the first one sharing hemp hearts, a new to us nutritional powerhouse. Straight out of the package hemp hearts are a bit soft, and if I may be completely honest, a tiny bit gummy. 

But I can tell you right now, taking a moment to toast the hemp hearts is so worth the effort! They turn into tiny little crunchy bits of warm nutty flavor, perfect for the top of oatmeal, roasted vegetables or even on top of a salad. Often a batch of toasted hemp hearts can be found, ready to enjoy in our kitchen. They keep very well, toasted and stored in a glass jar with a screw-top lid.

For those that love dairy with their oats, offer milk or cream on the side. But just so you know, they are also delicious just as they are...

Morning Oats with Blueberry Maple Compote and Toasted Hemp Hearts
by the seat of my pants

serves 2

2 c water
1/4 t salt
2 T brown sugar
1 t vanilla
1/4 t ground cinnamon

1 c oats
1-2 T oat bran, if desired, this added fiber is great, but not mandatory

1 c blueberries - frozen berries work great here!
2 T maple syrup

2 T raw hemp hearts

Bring the water and all ingredients through the ground cinnamon to a boil. 

Add the oats and the oat bran, stir well, reduce heat to simmer, cover and let cook until oats are done to your liking.
Note: oat brands vary, you may want to use the suggested cooking time on the package.

While the oats are cooking, combine the blueberries and the maple syrup in a small pan, just bring to a boil, set aside to cool.
Note: you may also complete this step in the microwave as we did.

Next, place the hemp hearts into a dry skillet, stir gently over medium heat until the hearts are golden brown. Transfer the toasted hemp hearts to a bowl to prevent from over-browning in the pan.

To serve place cooked oats in serving bowls, divide the blueberry compote over each bowl of oatmeal, then top with the toasted hemp hearts. Pass cream or milk at the table if desired.

  1. I love cooked breakfast cereals. I've never had hemp hearts ... I'll have to look for them at the store.

    1. Hemp Hearts are new on our table as well. I have started using them as a protein source for hot cereal, bread and snack making (such as energy bites). Toasted they are quite delicious! Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it.
